This week in class we discussed the expectations of English 1302 and the use of rhetoric. At the beginning of the semester, we have reviewed the syllabus and as students we are expected to work hard and honestly, to ensure success in this course. For instance, we should know how to correctly use citations and avoid any form of plagiarism. Also, we are expected to submit completed assignments on time and be prepared in class each day we attend. Relating to rhetoric, we learned how rhetoric can be used to convince people. For example, pathos is can be used to persuade the audience by allowing them to feel certain emotions. This is similar to the use of ethos and logos.
This week I have noticed rhetoric and argument in my everyday life. In my History 1302 course, we are reading the novel “Killers Of The Flower Moon” by David Grann which discusses the realities of Native American life in the late 1800s. While reading this book this week I noticed the use of rhetoric such as pathos. For instance, the novel includes images that relate to the discussed section. This adds emotion, especially in areas where it includes heart-felt and devastating information. This rhetoric helps establish an idea to the audience that proves how native Americans were mistreated.
Analyzing a rhetorical piece (cartoon):
In this cartoon, it shows a woman smoking, death, and multiple factors that can lead to death. It then shows the symbol of death that says “are you flirting with me?” which suggests that by smoking the woman wants death. After analyzing this cartoon, the use of rhetoric is pathos which is appealing to the audience’s emotion of the effects of smoking.
